ON JUNE 21, 2013, my life took a turn when I became one of the most hated people in the Wimmera.

Some would say it was my own fault.
I wrote a little opinion piece, my friend and colleague Cass put a headline on it and then the internet exploded.
The My Confession: Why I Hate Dogs column was not well received to say the least.
It soon became one of the most popular articles on our website for all the wrong reasons.
To this day, strangers still regularly comment on it.
At the time I wrote: ‘‘Hating dogs seems to be the equivalent of committing a violent crime. Judging by the reactions I get when I admit this, dogs seem to be the only thing that a person isn’t allowed to hate.’’
My colleagues had warned me the result would not be pretty, but no-one was prepared for the onslaught of hatred that came my way.
Actually, the reactions proved my point that it wasn’t socially acceptable to hate dogs.
A lone letter of support that was posted to me still sits above my desk and reminds me that as long as you stick to your convictions, things will be okay.
But support from those closest to you is most important of all.
On Saturday, I learnt that my boyfriend Brad does not always support me.
In fact, he had decided to get a dog.
Not only did he get a dog, he didn’t tell me about the dog until it was almost on our doorstep.
Max is the newest member of our household.
He is a jack russell that is tiny enough to sleep in a moccasin at night.
I’ve been told this is considered cute.
My reaction to the news of Max’s impending arrival did not go well.
There were tears. Lots and lots of tears.
There were also text messages to friends saying this dog would ruin the entire weekend and probably my life.
Did I mention the dog arrived the day before my birthday?
Max likes to bite people’s toes and fingers and pee on the carpet.
But after a week, I’m starting to grow used to the furry rat-like creature that whines at night.
After all, with every cloud there is a silver lining.
A new kitten joined our zoo on Wednesday.
Let’s hope she is better toilet-trained.
