Grade three and four pupils have created handmade Christmas cards for Horsham Meals-on-Wheels recipients.

Special religious program volunteer teacher Yolande Grosser said the idea came about while her class was talking about the festive season.

"We were talking about how Christmas is not always a fabulous, happy time," she said.

Mrs Grosser said the pupils brainstormed who in the community would benefit from a nice gesture this festive season.

She said the children were keen to make cards for Meals-on-Wheels recipients.

"They wanted to put a smile on someone's face," she said.

Mrs Grosser said pupils took a lot of care to make decorated cards with heartfelt well wishes and rhymes inside.

"I have so much admiration for the children, they are very thoughtful and generous," she said.

Horsham Rural City Council Meals-on-Wheels co-ordinator Jackie Bennett said the cards brought her to tears.

"I'm really really touched," she said.

"They will just love it."

Mrs Bennett said the cards would be distributed this week.

"This will be very special to people who don't have family around," she said.

Mrs Bennett said about 100 Horsham residents used the Meals-on-Wheels program.

She thanked not only Horsham West Primary School but her Meals-on-Wheels volunteers.

"I have fantastic volunteers that deliver each day," she said.

Mrs Bennett said more volunteers were needed for the weeks starting December 29 and January 5.

She said people could call 5382 9741 to volunteer.
