Shane Whitehead, 19, moved to Murtoa a couple of months ago to find a job after being unemployed since 2012.
‘‘I was renting in Melbourne and they kept on boosting the rent higher and I couldn’t afford it without a job,’’ he said.
Speaking to the Mail-Times on his first day at work at Schier Cabinet Makers, Mr Whitehead said he handed in a resume on Tuesday and started work on Wednesday.
‘‘I said I was available any time and all of a sudden I’m in an interview,’’ he said.
After a 20-minute interview with owner Mal Schier, Mr Whitehead was hired.
‘‘I told him I had recently moved up from Melbourne and I tried to get work there for quite some time, but they’re all looking for experienced people,’’ Mr Whitehead said.
Mr Schier said physically handing in a resume and showing initiative had worked in Mr Whitehead’s favour.
‘‘He rolled up on Tuesday morning with his resume,’’ he said.
‘‘He was a good, tidy, decent fella really wanting to have a go, and he started on Wednesday.’’
Mr Whitehead said the opportunities were there for people seeking work in the Wimmera.
‘‘As long as you are positive, as long as you show the initiative to work, you’ll get a job in country towns,’’ he said.
