The 47-27 victory meant the Wimmera team remained undefeated heading into the final round of the regular season.
Coach Gayle Leith said the team tried out different combinations against the Sovereigns.
‘‘We tried Kirby Knight and Georgia Duncan up front for the entire game and they played really well together,’’ she said.
‘‘For us, winning or losing games will come down to how we play up front, because our defence always plays very well.
‘‘We knew going into the game the Sovereigns were a development team, so we decided to start with a different seven and see how they played together.’’
The Wimmera’s 17 and under team had a narrow loss to Riddell District Football Netball League, 38-31.
‘‘They played really hard and it is wonderful to see them improve each week – they should be really proud of what they have achieved,’’ Leith said.
‘‘A lot of the girls they are playing against play regular A Grade netball, and hardly any of our girls have played in the senior grades.
‘‘A few of our girls have stepped up for the odd game, but really haven’t had a proper taste of senior netball.’’
Leith said the loss was further soured by an ankle injury to Emma Buwalda.
She said she hoped Buwalda would recover in time for the last game of the regular season on Friday.
