A 23-year-old man stopped to help a motorist who was parked on the side of Saviges Road, near the Moe Racecourse, about 10.30pm on January 17, police said.
"The man approached what he remembers as a dark-coloured vehicle that was parked on the shoulder of the road with hazard lights on and was then assaulted," police spokeswoman Belinda Batty said.
The victim does not remember how many people were involved in the assault, which left him with two black eyes and a split lip.
