The Grampians Food Alliance aims to raise awareness of what is being grown and what is available in the region.
Co-ordinator Meagan Ward said everyone wanted to be confident the food their families were eating was safe and nutritious.
‘‘The Grampians region produces a huge array of foods, many of which are currently being harvested,’’ she said.
Ms Ward said the alliance was established six months ago.
‘‘An investigation led by Grampians Pyrenees Primary Care Partnership over several years identified a number of food-related issues in the region,’’ she said.
‘‘These included limitations around finances, transport, knowledge in budgeting, purchasing, preparing and cooking food.
‘‘Health problems and lack of mobility are also a concern, as is the lack of available and affordable food in small townships.
‘‘A forum last year aimed to connect people and organisations interested in growing, sharing, sourcing and distributing food.
‘‘The forum was the catalyst for the alliance.’’
Ms Ward said there was great attendance at the forum and a lot of interest in setting up an alliance.
‘‘Establishing the alliance has provided a platform from which identified issues can be addressed,’’ she said.
‘‘There is a network of people with great skills and knowledge who are passionate about our region’s food system.’’
The official launch will be at Ararat College’s Trade Training Centre on March 13 from 4pm to 7pm.
The highlight of the evening will be cooking demonstrations and discussions with MasterChef winner Emma Dean.
There will also be displays, produce stalls, food swaps, live music and information about food in the Wimmera, the alliance and opportunities to be involved.
On March 14 from 10am to 3pm, producers and backyard growers across the region will open their gardens to showcase what food they grew.
Ms Ward said everyone was welcome to both events and entry was free.
‘‘The alliance is really excited about raising its profile within the community and promoting its goals,’’ Ms Ward said.
‘‘We are all about linking people and working together for more affordable, nutritious food that is widely available and accessible to all.
‘‘We also want educated and connected communities that grow, source, and cook healthy food and ensure we have an integrated and sustainable food system for future generations.’’
Ms Ward said people could call her on 5352 6227 for more information.
