McDonald is originally from Horsham and returned to play in the tournament with the Spectres.
Also competing were the Ballarat Miners, Mount Gambier Pioneers and Bendigo Braves.
It is the second successive year the four teams have competed in a pre-season tournament in Horsham.
The teams played each other once in a round robin format.
The winner is presented with the Graham Adams Shield, a perpetual trophy in honour of former Horsham Hornet Graham Adams who was killed in a 2007 car crash.
McDonald said it had been a successful tournament.
‘‘It has been a good tournament for us so far,’’ he said.
‘‘Just having a run and playing against some teams that you wouldn’t normally get to practise against is good.
‘‘Mount Gambier is so far away that we would never normally play them in a practice match.
‘‘You get to see what other teams are doing and how they’re shaping up early in the season.’’
A training session McDonald was scheduled to host for some junior players on Saturday did not go ahead, but the Miners were able to run a clinic for Horsham’s junior squad.
McDonald said the tournament was popular with players once again and he was keen to see it continue and become an annual event.
‘‘It’s been a well-run tournament and all the volunteers from the Horsham Amateur Basketball Association have been great,’’ he said.
‘‘We haven’t had to worry about anything at all, so I feel like they’re putting a fair bit of effort into it and there’s no reason at all why it shouldn’t become an annual event.
‘‘Coming back to Horsham, for me, personally, it’s pleasing to see the effort going into the tournament.’’
