The championships concluded on Sunday at Melbourne’s Albert Park, with 24 youngsters from Horsham, Ararat, Edenhope, Dimboola and Stawell involved.
Horsham athletics coach Rick Price said it was great to see the Wimmera athletes doing their best.
‘‘At any athletics meet you have your highs and lows, but they went pretty well,’’ he said.
Edgerton won the Wimmera’s only medal at the competition, snaring a bronze in the under-14 javelin.
‘‘Darcy getting a bronze was a really good effort,’’ Mr Price said. ‘‘Even though he didn’t quite throw his best, he could nearly have won.’’
Horsham’s Lily Cameron tried her hand at the under-15 high jump, and recorded a personal-best 1.62-metre jump to finish fourth.
‘‘Lily hasn’t done a lot of high jump, so to finish fourth with a personal best was fantastic,’’ Mr Price said.
Cameron’s Horsham team-mate Tara Jasper made the final in the under-15 100 metres and, despite finishing seventh in the final, was only one second behind the winner.
She also made the final in the 90-metre hurdles, as did Jordie McAuliffe in the under-14 javelin.
Mr Price said the state championship was the first for many Wimmera athletes, with the categories from as young as under-nines.
‘‘You’ve got to enjoy it in the first instance,’’ he said.
‘‘If they’ve never been to a state competition before it’s all about learning and getting used to it.’’
He credited the championships’ organisers for their efforts. ‘‘There’s a lot going on at once so they organise it pretty well,’’ he said.
‘‘It opens the eyes of some people to see how it’s run.’’
Edgerton also received an achievement award last week at Horsham Little Athletics Centre’s presentations.
He is the only under-14s boy at the club, which includes 105 athletes.
Mr Price said Edgerton’s self-motivation was second to none.
‘‘He does really well to keep going, considering he’s got no-one else to compete against,’’ he said.
Jeremy Bush and David Panozzo received life memberships at the presentations, to recognise their years of commitment to the club.
