He was a favourite with betters ahead of the prestigious footrace and won the gift with a time of 12.10 seconds.
The Queenslander, 28, produced the fastest time of the heats with a 12.13-second run on Saturday to make it through to the semi-finals on Monday.
He ran in semi-final five and posted an equally impressive 12.07 seconds despite not getting away to a good start.
Goodwin is the seventh Queenslander in history to win the Stawell Gift.
He said he felt lucky to have won.
"I had to check whether I'd won it or not, I couldn't believe it,'' he said.
"I tried to enjoy the whole experience and knew if I enjoyed it as much as or more than anyone else, then I was a good chance of getting the result.
"The enjoyment factor was a big part of it for me.
"I took a walk about 8am through the town centre and I was looking at some of those plaques with the winners and one of my group members made a joke that it could be my name up there next.
"I feel so lucky to be here right now.''
Coach Brett Robinson said Goodwin was a chance for the Rio Olympics in 2016.
"He's probably more a 400-metre runner,'' he said.
"After this, we've been talking about getting him ready for the Rio Olympics, so you could see him in the green and gold.''
Robinson made the Stawell Gift final himself in 2005 and 2006 and trained 2011 winner Mitchell Williams-Swain.
