Close injured his right knee while playing for the Brisbane Lions in their clash against North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne on Sunday night.

He landed awkwardly after a marking contest in the first quarter, and limped from the field before being subbed out of the game at quarter time.

Brisbane officials raised concerns about the state of the Etihad Stadium surface, which they believed might have contributed to Close's injury, after the match.

Lions chief executive officer Greg Swann said he had spoken to AFL football operations manager Mark Evans about an uneven patch of artificial turf surrounding the stadium's boundary, where Close injured himself.

"From the game's point of view they need to look at it you don't want it happening again," Swann said.

"We spoke to the AFL, just to put it on the record, we've had a close look at it and it happened after he clipped the edge of the astroturf."

The injury is a blow to both Close and the Lions, whose key forward stocks are thin.

Close made his debut for Brisbane last year after being drafted in 2012.

He played 14 games and showed good signs as an emerging forward, booting 10 goals.

Close signed a three-year contract extension tying him to the Lions until the end of the 2017 season, giving him stability while he rehabilitates his knee.

Close took to social media after learning he had ruptured his ACL on Monday.

"Thanks for all the kind messages," he said.

"Disappointing, but that's footy.

"Will be back next year."

The news was better for some of the Wimmera's other players in round two.

Kyle Cheney's Adelaide Crows continued to soar, topping the ladder for the second straight week.

Cheney, from Warracknabeal, gathered 15 disposals in Adelaide's 90-63 win against Collingwood.

Jake Lloyd and Adam Goodes played in Sydney's important win against Port Adelaide.

Goodes came off the bench as the substitute in an unfamiliar role for the champion, but Lloyd was solid with 20 possessions.

Edenhope's Tom McDonald was named among Melbourne's best performers for the second straight week, but the Demons went down to GWS 101-56.
