Hudson was selected for the six-person state team despite competing against boys in a higher age group.
This year the team was combined to include both under-15 and under-17 gymnasts.
It meant Hudson, 14, was competing against gymnasts up to three years older than him for a place on the team.
He was told he had been picked on Monday after completing two trials at the Victorian Men’s High Performance Centre in Prahran, where he trains.
Twelve gymnasts completed the trials, which involved routines on all six apparatus – floor, rings, pommel horse, vault, high bar and parallel bars.
Hudson finished third overall at the first trial last month and sixth overall at the second trial on Friday.
He excelled on pommel horse, rings and high bar at the first trial, while finishing with the top score in floor at the second trial.
Hudson said he was thrilled to make the Victorian team again.
‘‘I’m really happy about making the state team because there were so many people this year – there were 12 guys so I’m relieved to have made it,’’ he said.
‘‘We had the two trials and based on those results and training, the coaches picked the six people they thought would best represent the state at nationals.
‘‘I made the Victorian team in 2012 and last year, but it’s never been as much of a challenge as this year because there were so many people to compete against.’’
Hudson’s mother Leonie Irwin said it was a great effort from her son, especially considering he was dealing with a wrist injury during the trials.
‘‘He was complaining about his wrist when he got home from Canberra, and he had a sprain he was carrying, but he’s pushed through that and done well,’’ she said.
‘‘Level nine under has always been under-17 boys, but this year it was a challenge for him because they included under-15s too.’’
In addition to team duties, Hudson will also compete individually at the nationals.
The championships will be at Hisense Arena in Melbourne from May 18-30.
