The students had four Knowledge is Power education sessions at school during the past term to help prepare them to make good choices.
Horsham West Primary School grade six teacher Luke Fisher said the students wrapped up the education sessions with a party at Nexus on Wednesday.
‘‘At Nexus they have parties and gatherings once a month and it is a spot for some of them to gather and be in a supportive environment ,’’ he said.
‘‘The party introduced them to some of the services available at the centre.’’
Mr Fisher said while some pupils might have encountered drugs and alcohol already, most were not aware they were an issue in society.
‘‘It was just to give them a basic education of what drugs are and how they affect us, and giving them some education on what choices they have down the track,’’ he said.
‘‘Hopefully it will equip them to provide the right choices when confronted with these situations.’’
Mr Fisher said the pupils were given information sessions about different types of drugs, and joined in Horsham-specific role plays to help them understand the issues better.
‘‘They were put in a situation in May Park where they might have been affected by drugs and we did a bit of role play about how to deal with that situation,’’ he said.
‘‘There was also some brainstorming on why people use alcohol and drugs.’’
