Bona Lual, 37, admitted killing his estranged wife, Suzi Oghia, 31, but denied intending to cause her death when he stabbed her once in the stomach in her bedroom with a large chef's knife.

Crown prosecutor Andrew Tinney, SC, said the key to the case against Lual was the way he had deliberately opened Ms Oghia's eyes after she was dead and stabbed them with the tip of the knife.

"It was a feat of great resolve and great concentration," Mr Tinney told the jury before they found Lual guilty of murder on Wednesday.

"He had, after all, only just killed the mother of his children, presumably within minutes of when he then did this to her body.

"The children (now aged between five and 14) lay asleep in bed only metres away and ... here he was, using that large chef's knife to inflict those particular incise wounds to each of her eyes.

"It's impossible to view the mutilation of the eyes as being anything other than deliberate, focused and shocking violence inflicted upon a dead woman."

Mr Tinney said if Lual never intended to kill his wife, it was inconceivable he would have gone on to mutilate her eyes.

The prosecutor said what Lual did to his estranged wife's eyes was damning and a great insight into his feelings of hatred towards her.

"So strong were those feelings of hate, that even shortly after the time of her death at his hands, he had no respect for her, he had no concerns for her, he had no regret for what he had done, he detested her.

"He killed her but he still hadn't done enough. There's more he wanted to do, and that's what he did, that little bit more by mutilating her eyes."

Lual had entered Ms Oghia's Noble Park home just after 1am on November 5, 2013, before stabbing her. She bled to death in a very short period of time.

Mr Tinney said the defence had questioned a number of witnesses during the trial about Lual's love for Ms Oghia.

"This is a case about a number of things, but one thing it is not about is love," Mr Tinney said.

"Was it love that led the accused to be jealous of his wife and to suspect, for no good reason, that she was having an affair or might be having an affair with someone?

"Was it love that caused him to follow her ... to keep tabs on her, to frighten her, to intimidate her?

"Was it love that made him threaten to kill Suzi Oghia?

"Was it love that put the large chef's knife into his hand and caused him to do the horrible things to Ms Oghia that he did in that house with that knife?

"Did love then make him drive away from those premises, leaving his four children asleep in there while their mother lay dead on the floor?"

Mr Tinney said love "doesn't entail possessiveness and a desire to control and a desire to cause fear and a willingness to be nasty and threatening in words and actions.

"If you're looking for the sorts of human feelings and emotions that really led to the conduct of the accused in the days and weeks and months leading up to the killing by him of Suzi Oghia, might not resentment, anger, frustration, suspicion, jealousy, bitterness be far more likely motivators of his behaviour than love?"

Lual had claimed he loved Ms Oghia and was trying to reconcile with her when he stabbed her but he never intended to kill her.

Lual was remanded for a pre-sentence hearing on June 19.
