He was part of the five-person Victorian team that won bronze in the under-15 level nine under competition – the highest level for his age.
He finished the first day sitting in second position overall in the individual standings.
Irwin, who is from Horsham and trains at the Gymnastics Victoria Men’s High Performance Centre in Prahran, set personal bests in his floor and pommel horse routines.
He made two errors in his high bar routine, but recovered to finish day one only 2.433 points behind overall leader Heath Thorpe.
Irwin is one of about 1300 competitors at the championships, which are at Melbourne’s Hisense Arena.
Last year Irwin won two silver medals and two bronze at the championships.
One of the silver medals was for finishing second in the overall standings.
