Rogers said he was looking forward to hitting the Western Highway and making his Wimmera debut.
‘‘There’s nothing quite so wonderful as just getting out on the road, playing to people you haven’t played to before,’’ he said.
‘‘When I was growing up, what I dreamt of was that playing music meant you jumped behind the wheel or on your horse and drifted from town to town and did your best.
‘‘You either get out with a posse chasing you in anger or you get welcomed back next time.’’
Rogers said little planning had gone into the particulars of Friday night's show, which would be performed with musicians he trusted and loved.
‘‘We don’t rehearse at all, I’m not around a lot these days,’’ he said.
‘‘I’m an uneducated musician but I play with educated, spirited and talented musicians, so often there can be a confluence of flaky talent like my own and the musical brilliance of others.’’
Rogers is regularly self-deprecating, arguing he is the dumbest person in every band he is in.
At the height of its success in the 1990s, You Am I produced seminal Australian rock hits such as Berlin Chair and Heavy Heart.
Rogers is fresh from releasing an album with soul-funk band The Bamboos.
Earlier in the year he starred in a Melbourne Theatre Company production based on his first solo album What Rhymes With Cars and Girls.
After the solo show in Horsham, he will drive back to Melbourne to fly to Perth to play with You Am I.
On Tuesday, the band will play in London with one of Rogers’ favourite bands, The Replacements.
He said the key to maintaining his work across a variety of fields was enthusiasm.
‘‘If you turn up enthusiastic, keen to work and have fun, it’s not hard to switch gears at all,’’ he said.
Rogers will play at the Wesley from 8.30pm.
