Marriage equality is something more and more people are supporting and it’s important local government is in touch with the community.
Even if you don’t support the idea, Buloke’s decision has shown that those people in the community who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex are not alone.
This move will help end discrimination in country towns. It also puts the issue into the spotlight.
More Wimmera councils should follow Buloke’s lead and embrace the changing nation we live in.
Local government is the closest form of government to the community and it is important it represents our voices.
Federal members should listen to councils such as Buloke to learn about what people on the ground think.
A marriage equality bill is to be considered in federal parliament.
Hopefully, Australia can follow in the footsteps of the 17 other countries, including New Zealand, that allow same-sex couples to marry.
Creating change is always difficult, but steps such as this will go a long way to achieving true equality in our communities.
