The Royal Blues were wayward in front of goal and disappeared for patches in their 11-point loss to Wycheproof-Narraport on Saturday.
They took a 16-point lead into quarter-time before the Demons piled on seven goals to take a half-time advantage.
An inaccurate third term meant Donald led by just three points at the final change, and it could not hang on.
Coach Luke Fisher said momentum switched all day.
‘‘It was very up and down. We took control at times but there were some lapses that cost us,’’ he said.
‘‘We were inaccurate again and we weren’t consistent for four quarters.’’
Seamus Young booted four goals, but it was not enough to save Donald from the 14.8 (92) to 11.15 (81) defeat.
St Arnaud continued its attacking mindset on Saturday, beating Charlton by 31 points to remain on top of the ladder.
After a tight first half, the Saints slammed home six goals to two in the third term to set up the win.
In the round’s other match, Birchip-Watchem beat Wedderburn by 23 points.
Boort had a bye.
