JUNIOR gymnasts at Natimuk and District Gymnastic Club will put parents through their paces next week as part of the club’s Kids Coach for Cancer fundraiser.
Parents of club members can attend sessions on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week to help raise awareness and money for the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute.
A gold coin donation is required and further donations can be made at the sessions.
The event is in conjunction with Cross Dress for Cancer, an initiative by Horsham’s Morrow family members Wade, Shannon, Gavin and Daniel.
The Morrows and a few others will ride postie bikes from Thredbo, NSW, to the mouth of the river in South Australia.
They will cross dress during the ride, which will raise money to support the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute.
Will Tippet, a junior member of the Natimuk and District Gymnastic Club, heard about the Morrows’ ride while he was thinking of his own plan to raise money for the institute.
He realised Wade Morrow was the husband of his gymnastics coach at Natimuk and decided to create an event to support Cross Dress for Cancer.
Natimuk and District Gymnastic Club president Nicole Netherway said Will, 9, had shown great initiative.
‘‘Will came to us as a committee and said he wanted to support the Morrows’ Cross Dress for Cancer ride,’’ she said.
‘‘Will is a pretty switched on young kid – he’s quietly spoken but really passionate about it.’’
Will’s father Jamie said he was proud of his son for coming up with the idea.
‘‘His efforts to raise money for cancer research started three years ago because his gran died of cancer when he was young and his grandfather had bowel cancer,’’ he said.
Mr Morrow said it was great to see a young person like Will raising money for cancer.
He said 100 per cent of the money raised would go towards research. No money will go towards administration costs.
Cross Dress for Cancer will also host a cabaret night on August 1 at the Horsham City Oval clubrooms at 7.30pm.
Tickets are $10, and can be bought from Morrow Motor Group at 33 Dimboola Road, Horsham.
