St Brigid’s College student Seb Dalgleish and Horsham College’s Jackson Walsgott, both 15, have been picked to represent School Sport Victoria as umpires at the School Sport Australia football championships from July 19-25.

The championships feature representative student teams from all of Australia’s states and territories.

The teams compete in boys 12 and under, boys 15 and under, and girls 16 and under divisions.

The umpiring ranks also feature some of Australia’s best up and coming talent.

Dalgleish and Walsgott were picked for the championships by School Sport Victoria after submitting applications.

Umpires were picked based on information obtained by School Sport Victoria from their local leagues and umpiring groups.

Dalgleish and Walsgott are accredited umpires with more than four years of experience under their belts.

Walsgott, a boundary umpire, said he jumped at the chance to apply for a place at the championships.

“I had to submit a form to School Sport Victoria – it was pretty good to get picked for it,” he said.

Dalgleish will serve as a field umpire and said he became involved in umpiring through his family.

His father Kingsley is president of the Wimmera Football Umpires Association.

“I’m pretty excited about it,” he said.

“It has been good to have our umpiring achievements recognised.”

Dalgleish and Walsgott said they wanted to progress through the ranks and pursue careers as AFL umpires.

Walsgott is raising funds to support his trip to the championships, with Hillross Horsham agreeing to sponsor him.

Raffle tickets to raise money for Walsgott are on sale at The Fig Tree Cafe in Horsham.

He also received money from Horsham College’s Glancy Trust Fund.

The Wimmera will also be represented at the championships by Horsham West Primary School’s Ben Hobbs, 11, who has been picked for the School Sport Victoria 12 and under team.
