Recollection was a chance for Wimmera people to showcase their wedding and deb dresses.
Twins Georgia and Ally Hiscock modelled the wedding gowns of sisters Wilma and Pat Bennett at the event in Horsham. Wilma and Pat – who both attended the event – married brothers Ron and Hugh Bennett on January 30, 1960.
Recollection raised about $2000 for Kidzone, a free activity area planned for this year’s Horsham Show on September 27.
Event organiser and Horsham Agricultural Society secretary Andrea Cross said audience members voted the identical gowns as their favourite.
She said people had already offered to showcase their wedding gowns for next year.
“The positive feedback we have received has been overwhelming,” she said. “Events of this nature require months of planning. I have a good feeling about repeating it in Horsham’s new performing arts centre when it opens.”
The society's immediate past president Jo Lane – whose wedding dress was among 13 on show – said Recollection also incorporated a segment on young leaders, including six of the young men in the society’s leadership team.
These include Dalton and Dustin Cross, Leigh McGennisken, Matthew Hill, Nick Zordan and Jordan Lee.
"Three of these leaders were interviewed on stage by guest speaker Nkandu Beltz, and their stories of dedication to an organisation that started in the late 1800s was remarkable.” Mrs Lane said.
Dustin spoke about a new agricultural-based fundraising project the leaders were working on.
“We are seeking farmers who would be prepared to offer a few acres of stubble for us to invest and raise some fat lambs after harvest,” he said.
Audience member Robyn Anders said the young leaders were impressive.
“You just don’t realise what people do in our town,” she said.
“If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t have the joy of taking my two little grand-daughters to this year’s Horsham Show.”
The society also announced its annual raffle winners at the event. Tim Nurse won, with Chris Vettos claiming second prize. Alex Ellifson and Suzanne Bysouth were third and fourth respectively.
