Shomshe, 33, who goes by the name I-am Houdini on Facebook, was controversially released from prison on bail at the weekend so he could attend his wedding.

But he did a runner on his bride while she was in the shower and has not been seen since.

It was revealed on Monday that police had checked on Shomshe at his home just hours before he ran off on July 27.

Shomshe was due to face court later that day, but failed to show.

The 33-year-old was released on bail the day before his July 25 wedding after telling County Court judge Richard Maidment he would lose the $6000 deposit he had paid for the event.

Taskforce Fugitive detectives have now taken over the search and are appealing for Shomshe to hand himself in.

Shomshe is known to frequent the Epping, Altona, Werribee and Coburg areas.

He has convictions for drugs, violence and weapons offences and has previously failed to answer bail on three separate occasions.

Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said police had opposed Shomshe's bail, but had to "accept the umpire's decision".

"It was a court decision," he said Monday.

​Police Association secretary Ron Iddles said he had never heard of bail being granted for a wedding.

"It's very concerning," he told radio station 3AW on Monday.

"Our members will find him ... and hopefully they do it safely."

Members of the public who see Shomshe are asked not to approach him and contact triple-0 immediately.

Victoria Police crime statistics for the 2013-14 financial year show there were 8577 offences of "fail to answer bail", an increase of more than 21 per cent compared to the previous year.

There were 2104 indictable offences committed last financial year by people while on bail.
