Horsham typically hosts three meets a year, but enjoyed a fourth day of racing on Sunday after a meet was transferred from Bendigo.
Horsham and District Racing Club manager Lisa Inkster said the on-course betting turnover from the meet was three times that taken during the club’s May 9 meeting.
“It was the major Victorian meet for the day,” she said.
“The track held up well, which was our main concern.
“It was great to see so many local trainers and owners supporting us.”
Dean Yendall rode So Does He to victory in Sunday’s feature event at Horsham – the $30,000 Millers Horsham Cup handicap 30/10. Magic Consol and Imaging ran second and third respectively in the nine-horse field.
Ms Inkster said the club could not have asked for a better start to the year.
“There were quite a few local owners come down for a look,” she said.
“Everyone pats everyone on the back in racing. Even though the weather was pretty ordinary, it was great the owners still came out to support the trainers and horses.”
Ms Inkster said the club hoped an increase in prize money this season would also attract more owners and trainers, as well as punters, to the track.
“The majority of races will now be for a $20,000 purse,” she said.
“Previously they were $16,000.
“It’s a fantastic result for us and hopefully means we see great crowds track-side.”
