The new-look practice was officially opened on Wednesday night.

It includes electric front doors, a lift and an external ramp.

Lister House chairman David Wilson said the practice was revolutionary when built in 1936, but needed an overhaul.

“It was one of the first purpose-built group practices and was ahead of its time,” he said.

“It was almost a super clinic idea all those years ago.

”We have tried to renovate the practice to something that is going to last for a number of years.”

Mr Wilson said clients were pleased with the changes.

“The whole working environment is so much better than it was,” he said.

“It’s all been worth it in the end.”

Horsham architect Cameron Reid created the overall vision for the practice, and Horsham’s Locks Construction completed the refurbishment works.

Project manager Amanda Wilson said the practice interior was modernised but kept architecturally true to the original structure.

She said a new front desk area and better lighting were among the improvements.

“There is a new triage room for minor urgent cases that people can access by coming into the clinic rather than the hospital for minor procedures, and a new conference room that can be accessed by the allied health services for workshops or meetings.” 

Five new doctor teaching training rooms were also added.

Mrs Wilson said about 70 people attended the opening, including Member for Lowan Emma Kealy and Member for Mallee Andrew Broad.

She said Ms Kealy spoke about how the practice brought people together and how important strong facilities were to community longevity. “Andrew spoke about how the clinic is a credit to our community and that – because his wife worked in healthcare – he understood the central focus such a practice could be for people,” he said.

Mrs Wilson thanked everyone involved with the project and patients for their understanding during construction.

She also thanked Horsham Special School and Up Tempo Cafe for catering for the night.
