During the Horsham District league final the Kees kicked eight goals to two in the final quarter to turn the game on its head.
Schultz said his side had plenty of chances but couldn’t use the ball well enough in the first three quarters.
“There were times during the game when they seemed to be getting it on the scoreboard and I thought we were playing good enough footy but we weren’t opening up the game and putting the score on,” he said.
“There was definitely a scoring end here at Stawell and we knew if we could keep within four goals by the last quarter it would be doable.
“Once we get a run on we are pretty handy but we just couldn’t get that spark early on.
“I didn’t think we were too far away early, they were just scoring quicker when they had the ball.”
The efforts of Josh Beddison up forward kept the Kees in the game.
The big man finished with seven goals and Schultz was full of praise for the in-form forward.
“He just stepped up today when we needed him,” he said.
“He is a good, big game player who has battled with injury all year but is starting to get some continuity with his footy now.
“It does lift us when he kicks a goal and gets a roll going.”
Schultz said his side had been even all over the ground without anyone standing out throughout the afternoon.
During the final term, with an extra man on the field, due to Ben Roberts being sent off, the Lakers struggled to find an target across half forward and on the wing.
From the back-half Carl Thiez made several attempts to carry the ball forward but with tired players on the field the Kees size eventually won them the game.
Kalkee must now prepare for a re-match with Harrow-Balmoral on Saturday in the Horsham District league preliminary final.
Schultz said the win over the Lakers would give the Kees an enormous amount of confidence when they take on the Roos next week.
The winner of that game will play against Laharum in the grand final the following week.
