John Watts, 53, also pleaded guilty to breaching a safety order, in Horsham Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
Police prosecutor Senior tConstable Michelle Wentworth said Watts and the victim got into a verbal argument on January 15.
Watts made a comment about killing himself and then grabbed a kitchen knife and held it to his throat.
The victim went to call triple zero, but Watts tried to stop her and accidentally scratched her face when trying to take the phone from her.
The victim then locked herself in the bathroom and called police, who attended and issued a safety notice against Watts.
Sen Const Wentworth said Watts returned to the property the next day, which was in breach of the order.
Watts’ lawyer Tim White said both parties were affected by alcohol at the time of the argument.
He said Watts had mental health issues and had attempted self harm in the past.
“He is sincerely remorseful about this incident,” he said.
Magistrate Peter Mithen said while mental health was a serious issue, self harm should never be used as a lever to threaten someone.
“It is not acceptable – you can’t use your issues against others,” he said.
Mr Mithen ordered Watts to enter a good behaviour bond for a year and donate $400 to the court fund.
