HORSHAM survived a late comeback against Stawell to win the Wimmera Netball Association’s B Grade grand final at Warracknabeal by six goals on Saturday..
The final score saw the Demons 43 to the Warriors’ 37
The Demons powered away in the second term to take a big 11-goal lead.
Despite the Warriors forcing their way back into the game, the margin proved too much to overcome.
But the experienced Stawell side fought hard in the third term and reduced the gap to six points at the final change.
Stawell’s shooters were on song during this period, hardly missing a shot and making the most of every opportunity they had to score.
Horsham captain Melanie Scott said she was relieved to get the win in tough conditions.
“We are very relieved, it was very hard, it was hot conditions and they came back hard at us in the second half,” Scott said.
“”They were always going to comeback at us.
“We do have a much younger team compared to their more experienced team, but I felt we kept our composure and kept to our long game.”
Scott admitted she was a little concerned late in the game as Stawell piled on goals to come within four goals, but said she knew her team could do enough to win.
“I was confident we could keep our lead,” she said.
“It was a great team game, Lauren Wilkinson shot exceptionally well and Sheridan Peters moved the ball well down the midcourt, but it was a great team game.”
Peters was awarded the best on court medal for her strong game.
Earlier in the game the Demons had looked unbeatable as they powered away to their big lead.
Their passing game was on and they rarely turned the ball over as they went forward into attack.
It took the Warriors some time to adjust but eventually their defensive pressure began to take its toll and Horsham struggled to find open shots.
The Warrior’s carried this form into the last term, slowly chipping away at the margin.
At one point, they had reduced the Demons’ lead to just four goals.
But a costly missed shot at the Warriors’ end saw Horsham rush back down the court and score.
They retained possession at the centre pass and scored again, giving themselves some breathing space.
It proved enough to win them the game and deliver Horsham the grand final.
