The Hornets are heading to Colac for a 6pm tip-off against the South West Division’s newest team.
After making finals in the 2014-15 season, coach Gareth Hiscock said his side wants to go even further in 2015-16.
“Last season we were knocked out in the semi-final stage and I think every club starts a new season looking to go one step further so that is our goal,” he said.
“There is an extra team in the competition this year with Colac joining, so it will be tougher.”
The Hornets are not getting ahead of themselves, with their focus firmly on the first round clash.
But with five players out for the game those who do take the court will have to be switched on.
Hiscock said he would look to his senior players to lead the young side.
“Annie Brack at centre is certainly one of our key players,” he said.
“Also forward Sharon Fedke is looking to make a return to the court. She is a very experienced player who has played a very high level of country basketball.”
These experienced leaders will be very important to the Hornets.
However Hiscock is not lowering his expectations of the younger players either, saying they were all quality players capable of doing the job.
“Last season’s MVP Georgia Hiscock is still only 15-years-old and she will be in for a big season,” he said.
“The five young kids are some of our strongest players and they have been on the fringe of state teams.
“They are strong players in their own right and we will see some improvement from last year as those kids get older and more experience.”
With Colac only new to the competition it is hard to predict how Saturday night will turn out for the Lady Hornets.
Hiscock said despite having never played them before, his side would be expecting to return with a win.
“We know nothing about them, but we are going in with full expectations to win the game,” he said.
