Parminder Singh, 29, appeared in the Supreme Court on Friday to formally plead guilty to murdering Nikita Chawla on January 9 in her Brunswick West apartment.
As Singh was being led into the dock, he passed Ms Chawla's mother who was holding a framed photograph of her daughter.
Justice Lex Lasry remanded Singh to appear on November 13 for a pre-sentence hearing.
When Singh was taken from the dock, he refused to look at Ms Chawla's family.
An earlier court hearing was told Singh had told the triple 0 operator to come and collect the body.
