Horsham took home the coveted gong at the 2015 Keep Victoria Beautiful Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities Awards at Beechworth on Saturday.
It is the sixth time Horsham has been named Victoria’s tidiest town.
Horsham was a finalist in eight of the 10 awards categories, winning two and receiving a highly commended in another. Horsham Tidy Towns Committee Chair Dr Don Johns described the win as “unbelievable”.
“This is a credit to all of the wonderful work done by local people to look after and improve our wonderful city. This is a huge win for Horsham,” he said.
Horsham beat out Mornington, Beechworth, Rutherglen, Hastings and Wangaratta to win the state’s tidiest town gong.
“We were up against the big hitters,” Mayor Mark Radford said.
“Once again Horsham is punching above its weight.”
Horsham Special School won the Active Schools Award early in the night while the Project 1914 free family fun day received a highly commended in the Sustainable Practices Award.
Other finalists included Axis Works, Horsham Historical Society, Wimmera River Improvement Committee, Horsham Rural City Council, Wimmera Catchment Management Authority, Landcare and Wimmera school students.
Cr Radford said a delegation of 16 had attended the awards, which included representatives from the Horsham Tidy Towns Committee and representatives from the nominated community groups.
The overall award was presented to Cr Radford and Dr Johns by the chairman of Keep Victoria Beautiful Dick Gross.
The large timber map of Victoria lists the names of all past winners.
“Horsham has a dedicated committee who work year round with community groups and council to encourage ongoing beautification, recycling and litter reduction,” Mr Gross said.
Horsham now enters the judging for the national tidy towns awards and will host the 2016 state awards next October.
