The bridge will stretch from Apex Island to Major Mitchell Drive.

Horsham Rural City Council initially thought work could start in April, but a design review caused delays.

Council awarded the bridge tender to J. and R. Industries of Wangaratta for $760,029 earlier this year. Council estimated a range of ancillary works – such as building concrete culverts across the causeway from Apex Island to Barnes Boulevard – would cost $240,000.

Council’s technical services director John Martin said the bridge’s proposed design was based on an almost identical suspension bridge J. and R. Industries constructed in Mudgee, NSW.

However he said the Mudgee bridge swung more than council wanted, and design changes were made to the Horsham bridge to reduce movement.

“A further design review was required to ensure the bridge would meet relevant Australian standards, to ensure public safety,” he said. 

“This included general pedestrian loads and wind loading. This design review determined some modifications were required.

“Additional stiffening of the bridge decking and some cable stays have been incorporated into the final design.”

Mr Martin said the review was essential to ensure the bridge would be safe and long-lasting.

“Although the period of the design review has been prolonged, fabrication of many non-structural elements has been undertaken during this period in preparation for the main construction,” he said.

“A compressed construction timeframe is anticipated.” Site preparations have started, and council will host a sod turning on Thursday.

Mr Martin said foundations should be constructed by Christmas, with the Christmas break allowing the concrete time to reach the required strength.

“The timetable for completion will be updated after construction has started,” he said.
