Men’s health has been put on the agenda thanks to the campaign led by men growing moustaches to raise funds and awareness.
Traditional male stereotypes often lead to men not talking about their health or ignoring potential issues until it is too late.
Colin Campbell has been running Movember Team Dimboola for the past three years and first got involved when a friend was diagnosed with cancer.
When his mate Spotty Warner passed away, Mr Campbell continued with the Movember campaign, including the now annual Dimboola fun run at the Nine Creeks walking track.
Mr Campbell said he wanted to see more men talking about their health rather than ignoring it.
“If we can get more people talking about those issues and seeing professionals about them, whether physical or mental, that is the aim,” he said.
“Maybe we can help them detect something early or help them with a mental health issue.
“If we can make that happen then I think we will have done our bit.”
The team aims to raise $5000 and get about 70 people to the fun run.
With fine weather expected it should be a more comfortable run than the 2014 event, which was undertaken in trying 38 degree heat.
At Murtoa, Matt Tepper is once again growing some bristles in support of the men’s health cause.
After the 23-year-old’s father Daryl was diagnosed with prostate cancer the family banded together.
Daryl survived the disease, but the family continues the tradition of Movember.
Mr Tepper said before his dad was diagnosed with cancer he did not know much about it.
“It was a few years back and we didn’t know much about it,” he said.
“A lot of people wouldn’t know anything about it until they experience it.
“At the time I was at uni in Melbourne and it was a very stressful time.
“It helps highlight warning signs for prostate cancer and things people need to look out for.”
But the Tepper family got through the ordeal and the extended family still grows moustaches.
“We are a very close family but I suppose doing Movember has set a new way for us to bond with each other and do something together as father and son.”
The campaign ends soon but anyone wanting to donate can do so at the campaign’s Facebook page.
Registrations from the Dimboola fun run start from 10.30am and the run starts at 11am. It costs $10 for adults, $5 for children and a barbecue provided.
