Wimmera Development Association settlement worker Julie Flaherty said about 100 people attended the Loy Krathong Festival on the Wimmera River on Saturday.
“We were so pleasantly surprised,” she said.
“Because it was the first time we didn’t know what to expect.”
Loy Krathong is a traditional Thai festival celebrated on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar.
The event falls in November in the western calendar this year.
Attendees were able to make a krathong – a small garland decorated with flowers, to pay respect to water spirits.
Ms Flaherty said the krathongs were floated along the river.
“It’s so appropriate to highlight the importance of water in the two countries,” she said.
She said people also enjoyed traditional dancing and food.
“We can’t wait for next year,” she said.
