With the Southern Mallee Giants joining the league for the 2016 season, the opportunity was taken to also increase the number of teams playing finals.
Under the new format, the top two sides will both have a week off in the first week.
It will still be a four week fixture and includes changes for teams across every grade.
Horsham District league Chairman Graeme King said the changes would provide more teams the chance to participate in finals.
“Everyone loves playing finals, just to take part in a finals series is a big thing for a club and individuals,” he said.
“If this helps and encourages teams to push all the way it keeps the interest up towards the end then it is a big positive.
“We just view it as a positive completely and we don’t see any negatives to it at all.”
The new format will see four weeks of finals played.
Week one: Elimination finals will see three v six and four v five. The winners progress to the semi finals.
Week two: Winners of the elimination finals play off. In the other semi final one plays against two for a grand final spot..
Week three: Loser of one v two play in a preliminary final.
Week four: Winner of the preliminary finals heads into the grand final where they meet the winner of the semi final between one and two.
