For the sixth time, Horsham Golf Club’s ladies will host their commemorative Ashes event, which remembers the sheer devastation of the golf course in the wake of the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires.

The course has since been transformed since that day from a beautiful tree-lined track to a more open links-like layout.

But to the players – no matter the changes – it is loved just as much.

On Thursday, lady golfers will once again play for the Ashes trophy, a perpetual prize crafted from the charred remains of a tree destroyed on Black Saturday.

The three-ball stableford event already has 75 members booked to play, with club publicity officer Colleen Dix hoping that number would swell.

“We’re hoping to get up to 100 or so people,” she said.

“It’s limited to Horsham Golf Club ladies members and it’s immensely popular.”

Mrs Dix said the event held a special place in the hearts of lady golfers at the club.

“It really does mean a lot,” she said. “Not only for the club but for the devastation in general. People lost their lives and their homes.

“We’re celebrating the golf course coming back.”

Mrs Dix said the perpetual trophy added an extra special dimension to Thursday’s event.

“One of our lady members and her husband fashioned it. It’s a piece of wood, but polished,” she said.

Thursday’s Ashes event will start at 7.45am with a shotgun start.

Horsham Golf Club’s ladies will again kick into gear on Thursday February 11, with its Ladies Pinehurst Day.

The event is set to welcome players from the Wimmera and Mallee and beyond.

Major sponsor Carlin and Gazzard Mercedes Benz of Mt Gambier will offer prizes including accommodation in Mt Gambier and complimentary use of a Mercedes Benz.
