This support unit will accommodate 15 residents that have high care needs.
This is the beginning of the implementation of the Montessori model of care throughout 70 Lowe St.
Montessori is based on the educational philosophies of Dr Maria Montessori.
Her philosophy and principles were adapted to dementia care by Dr Cameron Camp to improve the care offered to people with dementia.
Montessori focuses on supporting both the person and the environment, which is adapted to support memory loss and independence.
We cannot change the affects of dementia but by embracing Montessori principles and implementing environmental adaptations (including meaningful activities, roles and environmental cueing), we can improve the care of people with dementia.
The result is that residents are able to make meaningful contributions to their community, engage in activities and have the opportunity to maintain and possibly restore function.
Already at 70 Lowe Street we are seeing residents happier, more engaged and their lives have greater meaning once more.
As one resident said “I love that I have jobs and things to do. They’re things that I used to do every day and it gives me a reason to get out of bed every day. It feels like home”.
The service we offer in residential aged care needs to more strongly reflect aged care facilities are in fact peoples’ home where some residents can live for years.
We acknowledge that into the future we need to improve the care we provide through greater support of the staff and development of appropriate facilities.

THE design of this modern spacious building promotes easy access for all residents. The building design maximises natural light and ventilation and includes landscaped surrounds to provide a positive therapeutic affect.
With flexible areas and a passive solar design, the facility is a pleasurable place for our residents to reside.
