Passengers were delayed by up to one hour when train services were both cancelled and suspended from 7am.
First, city-bound trains between Craigieburn and North Melbourne were suspended due to a police incident involving an agitated man at Craigieburn station.
That caused 25-minute delays for commuters.
Not long after, a truck crashed into the Newmarket rail bridge on Racecourse Road, adding a further 20 minutes to the delays.
Forty-five minutes later, three small fires ignited near Strathmore train station, along Moonee Ponds Creek, which brought trains to an abrupt halt.
Firefighters asked Metro Trains to suspend services, which extended delays on the Craigieburn line to one hour.
The fires also led to delays on the Upfield line, on which several services were cancelled.
The fires at Strathmore were extinguished in about 40 minutes, but it was too late to alleviate the commuter pain.
The blazes were not being treated as suspicious, a Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokesman said.
Commuters were not impressed, with many turning to Twitter to vent their frustration.
I almost needed another day off on account of the stress I endured today just to get to work. Poor form. Yet again. #metrotrains— Balletslipper (@balletslipper) February 8, 2016
I'm expecting the next delay announcement on the craigieburn line today to be due to zombie apocalypse #metrotrains #cluster— MelB (@MKB27) February 8, 2016
