The Willing Walkers team will disband after 16 years together.
Lyn Smith is one of three original members still involved.
She said the group was just getting too small to raise money.
“We dwindled down from 18 to five or six,” she said.
“So we decided the best thing to do was disband.”
Mrs Smith said the group had had a lot of different members over the years, and had walked every year since the event’s inception, except for two years when conditions did not permit.
“We called it the Willing Walkers because we were all willing,” she said.
Mrs Smith said individuals from the team who wanted to continue participating for years to come would join other teams.
She said she would join her daughter’s team next year, the Froot Loops.
Mrs Smith said she and the rest of the Willing Walkers had watched the event become extraordinary over the years.
“There were about half a dozen teams at first,” she said.
“Now there are 50.
“It just grew and grew and grew.
“It’s become what is was meant to be.”
She said although the event was fun and entertaining, it was important to remember the real reason everyone was there.
“What you need to do is donate – fund the research,” she said.
