Horsham Rural City Council approved grants for more than 90 groups at a council meeting on Monday night.
The money will be available in the 2016-17 financial year, and represents a 1.7 per cent increase on the community grants allowance for 2015-16.
Council’s community grants program offers money for sport and recreation clubs, hall management groups, kinders, welfare and community groups, events and other organisations.
Groups could request up to $10,000.
Cr Mark Radford said he was pleased to see a wide variety of groups allocated money.
As far as bang for your buck, I really think the community grants are great value to our community,” he said.
“They create opportunities for groups of all types to do things they would never be able to do otherwise.”
Cr Radford said council had increased its community grants spending each year for the past 10 years.
“I know $325,000 is a lot of money, but it’s money well spent,” he said.
Cr Robin Barber agreed.
“As I look through the list of all the applications, the majority of them are not fully funded, but the grants will help volunteers to get projects done,” he said.
“We all know, as volunteers, it’s difficult to raise money. This program helps them achieve what they need and want.”
Cr Sue Exell said volunteers were the municipality’s most valuable asset.
“They work so hard in their communities. They’re the hands-on people providing services, so anything we can do to help is really good,” he said.
“I’d also like to say to groups to make sure you do apply.
“If you’ve missed out this round, we’ve always got a dedicated officer who is good at grant writing, so don’t be shy in coming in and having a talk to us.”
Cr Pam Clarke said the grant allocations were one of the best things council offered.
Council will write to each successful grant applicant.
