Braeden Patrick Gatt, 23, appeared in Horsham Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, where he pleaded guilty to speeding and driving while disqualified.
Police prosecutor Senior Constable Michelle Wentworth told the court Gatt was caught travelling at 124 kilometres an hour on the Henty Highway on November 19.
The road is a 100-kilometre-an-hour zone.
He was intercepted by police and admitted to not having a licence as it was disqualified. Gatt told police he had no reason for driving while disqualified or speeding.
Defence lawyer Tim White said Gatt’s partner was pregnant and he had no incentive to re-offend. Magistrate Cynthia Toose said Gatt’s driving record was appalling.
“If you don’t learn now to toe the line, with an impending baby, then you never will,” she said. “You are the sort of person we don’t want on the roads, if you can’t comply with safety.”
She convicted Gatt of all charges and fined him $1500.
A HORSHAM man has been fined for driving without an interlock device.
James Alexander Wishart, 25, pleaded guilty to breaching his interlock condition and not displaying P-plates.
Sen Const Wentworth said Wishart was driving east on Natimuk Road, Horsham, at 11.55pm on March 17.
He was intercepted by police, who noticed he did not have an interlock device in his car and he did not have P-plates.
Sen Const Wentworth said Wishart made full admissions to police and told them he was going to a pool competition and decided to drive because it was raining.
He said the P-plates had fallen off.
Wishart told the court he knew he did the wrong thing.
Ms Toose said a pool competition was not a good reason to do the wrong thing.
“The court makes orders about interlock devices for good reasons – it’s about not putting the community in danger,” she said.
Ms Toose warned Wishart that he would be imprisoned if he was caught driving without an interlock device again.
She convicted Wishart of all charges and fined him $800.
