Horsham Rural City Council has appointed MRCagney to lead its municipal parking plan, which will consider current and future parking demands in the city.
Council’s planning and economic director Angela Murphy said consultation was planned for mid-June.
“It has certainly been on council’s agenda for some time, to review where we’re going with parking for the future,” she said.
“The consultants we’ve appointed have significant experience in parking policy and will really take a holistic view.
“They will look at car parking for developments, as well as demand and supply for parking in the city, plus health and well-being aspects around being socially connected, and activities that happen in the central business district.”
Ms Murphy said community consultation was an important part of the strategy.
“Consultants will be in the city for three days, so there will certainly be opportunities for consultation to make sure we get feedback to support where we go with the strategy.
“The consultant will meet with council in June, then take a couple of months to work through things from there.”
Ms Murphy said consultations would include two community workshops – one on a weeknight and the other at a weekend – a traders and business workshop, and meetings with the Horsham parking advisory and consultative committee and special interest groups.
She said the strategy aimed to identify business and community need and recommend programs that would improve parking space use and turnover.
“The consultant will run an initial workshop with councillors to provide an insight into the project direction, and canvas concerns with any current aspects of the parking system,” she said.
“Once completed, the consultant will provide a presentation to council on the prepared municipal parking strategy.”
