The Art Matters project involves artists with a disability and focuses on interdisciplinary visual and performing arts practices.
Visual artist Anthony Pelchen, dance artist Amy Anselmi and video-graphic artist David Bowe are leading the group of about 15 artists, who meet each Monday in Horsham’s Jubilee Hall.
Artists from Cooinda in Nhill, Woodbine in Warracknabeal and Grahams Bridge Road in Horsham have also contributed pieces for the project.
The group’s showcase Art Matters – Collection Swab Exhibition will open on June 6 as part of Horsham’s Art is… Layers of Time festival.
It includes a silent auction where people can buy artwork.
Horsham Rural City Council council development officer Jillian Pearce said 12 pieces would be on display.
“Money raised from the auction event will go back into supporting the next Art Matters project starting in July and culminating in a series of performances in December 2017 as part of the International Day of Disability,” she said.
“This will be guided by the artist participants who made the work.
“All offers will be assessed and winning bidders contacted by June 14.”
Ms Pearce said the Art Matters group evolved from discussions at the 2015 Art is… festival, which identified a need to increase art opportunities for people with disabilities.
She said the Art Matters project would also involve a series of ‘swab mob’ impromptu performances in Horsham during the 2016 Art is…festival, which runs from June 3 to 12.
“The aim of this initial project is to build a permanent arts group that meets and socialises around the making and presenting of visual and performing arts,” she said.
“This project would not have happened if it weren’t for the generous support from council, Wimmera Rural Access and the federal government’s Regional Arts Fund, administered in Victoria by Regional Arts Victoria.”
The Art Matters opening event starts at 6pm.
The silent auction will continue from noon to 2pm each day at Jubilee Hall until June 10.
