A resident contacted the Mail-Times this week, concerned the gum tree on Dooen Road had been cut down.
He said its removal had frustrated people in the area.
However council’s technical services director John Martin said the tree had to be removed for safety reasons.
“The large sugar gum was identified as a hazardous tree,” he said.
“It had a lot of dead wood in it, including at many of the limb joints, and needed to come down.”
