Temperatures hovered around zero at the state's ski resorts for much of Thursday.
Mount Buller received a light dusting of fresh snow, and flurries which saw snow accumulating on the upper mountain.
Buller Ski Lifts general manager Laurie Blampied welcomed the early snow ahead of the opening of the ski season on the Queen's Birthday weekend.
At Falls Creek, marketing officer Nathan Fenton reported about 1cm of snow at the highest point in the village on Thursday, and about 5cm on the ski fields.
"This morning in particular we had some pretty big snowflakes falling across the village. It lasted for a good two hours and generated a lot of buzz, a lot of excitement," he said.
Saturday is expected to bring even more of the white stuff, with estimates of between 8cm and 20cm at Falls Creek.
In Melbourne, city workers shivered through the coldest maximum temperatures since last September, reaching just 12.5 degrees.
"September last year was the last time we had a maximum below 13," said Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Peter Newham. "It's the same for a lot of Victoria."
If you're sick of the cold weather already, don't get your hopes up. Maximums are expected to be around the 15 degree mark for the next week or so.
