Two new rail bridges over the Yarra River - one for trams and one for freight trains - will be the defining gateways to Fishermans Bend once the sprawling inner-city industrial zone is redeveloped into a new city for 80,000.

The planned suburb will also have a new underground railway line.
Its residents and workforce of 60,000 will be heavily dependent on public transport, walking and cycling to get around.
Private car journeys will be discouraged, with parking spaces reduced and fewer than one in five journeys made by car.
The new suburb will be a dense mix of skyscrapers and lower-rise apartment buildings and townhouses, with plenty of green space and tree canopy to combat the rising impact of climate change.
This, at least, is the vision presented in a new "draft vision" for the precinct, which the Andrews government calls "the biggest urban renewable area in Australia".
The suburb is still overwhelmingly industrial and was once the heart of Victoria's aviation and car manufacturing industries, but was rezoned by the former Napthine government from industrial to capital city in 2012.
The consultation paper details what Fishermans Bend might look like in 2050.

"Now, we have the chance to make it a benchmark for smart, sustainable development and high-density community living," Richard Wynne, the Minister for Planning, writes in the foreword.
"For that to happen, we need to tackle challenges such as public transport, schools, community services and public spaces now, rather than putting up residential towers and hoping for the best."
Transport links, including the reactivation of the disused Webb Dock rail line and a light rail extension from the CBD have been suggested, though the vision does not define where these links would run. VicRoads and Public Transport Victoria will investigate more detailed options for transport, the paper says.
The plan divides Fishermans Bend into five neighbourhoods.
Montague, which is today part of South Melbourne, will be dominated by tall buildings at its northern boundary near the West Gate Freeway. Light-industrial Buckhurst Street will be converted into a retail and dining strip lined with trees.
Lorimer, between the Yarra and the freeway, will have a mix of tall and low-rise buildings, "water transport links to the CBD and Docklands", and a high-frequency tram line running east-west, potentially along the corridor of the former Webb Dock freight rail link, which closed in the 1990s.

Sandridge, just north of Port Melbourne, will be a densely populated commercial centre.

Nearby Wirraway will be a "family-friendly neighbourhood" with "small to medium scale apartment buildings" and a "thriving arts scene".
The tram line will extend through Wirraway along Plummer Street, which will be renamed Plummer Boulevard and will be the area's shopping and dining strip.
A large employment precinct for the research, engineering and technology industries will occupy the western part of Fishermans Bend. This area was included in Fishermans Bend when Labor expanded the redevelopment area from 205 to 455 hectares last year.

Freight trains will move goods between Webb Dock at the mouth of the Yarra and the wider rail network.
"A freight transport connection ensures the ongoing efficient operation of the Port of Melbourne," the draft document states.
The Fishermans Bend Recast Vision is open for public consultation.
