Melbourne's homeless ram is in the market for a new winter sweater, after receiving a long-overdue haircut on Monday.

Jackie Chan - as the sheep is known - has been sleeping rough with owner Godwin Aquilina on a grassed traffic island in Melbourne's CBD for more than a week.

Mr Aquilina decided to move to the city from his property near Bacchus Marsh after the local council ordered the ram be removed from his home, following complaints it had attacked people.

With Jackie Chan tethered in a park opposite the Immigration Museum, it did not take long for the pair to come to the attention of homelessness services.

Royal District Nursing Service nurse Jo O'Neill was concerned that Jackie Chan had become overgrown and on Monday she organised a farmer to drive in from East Geelong to shear the animal at a heavily discounted rate.

As a small crowd of on lookers gathered, the ram was thrust on to its backside by shearer Colin Cooper and his coat was slowly cut away to reveal a snowy layer underneath.

Wayne Barker from Mobile Stockyards said Jackie Chan had probably not been completely shorn for a couple of years.

"He'll feel the cold to begin with, but they create a lot of lanolin that protects them" he said.

Mr Barker added that the ram appeared healthy.

Mr Aquilina – who has an acquired brain injury – is continuing his public campaign against Moorabool Shire Council, which recently refused a permit to allow Jackie Chan to continue living in the backyard of his Maddingley home.

"Moorabool wiped their hands of me so I'm now the Melbourne mayor's problem," he said.

Asked if Jackie Chan had attracted plenty of attention, Mr Aquilina replied: "Of course. He's a ram in the city."
