Less than two weeks out from the long weekend ski season opening, Victoria Police is preparing to pull its officers off the mountain.

The plan to remove police normally stationed at Falls Creek, Mount Buller and Mount Hotham for the duration of the season has angered resort staff and the emergency services that work alongside them, who say it endangers them and the public.

Instead, force command is proposing the resorts  be serviced by police working from stations at the bottom of the mountains during the week and rostering officers on the mountain on weekends only.

The problem, Falls Creek medical clinic director Jeffrey Robinson said, is that it can take at least an hour for police to drive up the mountain.

"You would have to wait over an hour for officers to come up from Mount Beauty before you actually enter the scene, which is obviously a ridiculous concept," Mr Robinson said.

One doctor from his clinic is on-call throughout the season and they often rely on police to accompany them to an emergency if there's an aggressive patient.

"It's just not safe for us to be there without police back-up," Mr Robinson said.

Ambulance Employee Union secretary Steve McGhie said the solo paramedics working on the mountains would also have to wait until police back-up arrived.

"It puts the public at risk and puts other emergency services at risk," he said.

Member for Benambra Bill Tilley called on Police Minister Lisa Neville to dump the plan ahead of a meeting between herself, the Police Association and force command on Thursday.

"The facts simply don't support the plans to have an 'off-mountain' presence," Mr Tilley said.

Falls Creek, where the population rises to between 5000 and 10,000 people, has on average 20 search and rescue jobs each winter where police are the lead agency.

The officers, who have been stationed on the mountain for the past 26 years, patrol ski fields, the mountain's roads and the resort's 42 licensed premises. Two years ago, police conducted about 400 walk-throughs at the resort's pubs and clubs.

There are 16 specially-trained officers on the station's roster, but a small number would work from the mountain each season. That number had dropped to three officers in recent years and last year, because of the force's two-up policy, it dropped to two.

Falls Creek resort chief executive Stuart Smythe said he hoped Thursday's meeting would resolve the uncertainty.

"We're hoping to see, at a minimum, the same resourcing we had last year (two officers) and if at all possible, even more," Mr Smythe said.

Mr Smythe said the work the police have done on the mountain cannot be measured by statistics.

"It's the proactive aspect of policing, the physical presence of having police in a resort on a full-time basis in a community," he said.

Victoria Police said in a statement opening hours at the stations are yet to be determined.

"There will be a police presence this snow season, with police continuing to have the ability to response to incidents across the state's alpine areas," the statement read.

"Rosters will be planned to best resource the area and meet the needs of the community. This winter, police will patrol the road network, townships and slopes, and conduct liquor licensing operations."

Ms Neville said in a statement she has been assured by Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton that there will be a police presence this winter to keep holidaymakers safe.

"The government has been advised Victoria Police is undertaking consultations on the best policing model for the alpine area," she said.

Victoria's ski fields have been marred by tragedy in recent years.

In 2014, the bodies of two snowboarders were recovered after an avalanche at Mount Bogong. A seven-year-old boy was killed at Mount Buller when he was buried by snow that had fallen from a roof.
