Firefighters performed a high-angle rescue to retrieve the woman, believed to be in her 30s, after she fell from an apartment balcony on Queen Street just after 4pm.

MFB crews had to use a crane to pull the woman from where she landed, six storeys above street level. She suffered severe injuries and was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital where she later died.

Police are not treating the woman's death as suspicious and she is yet to be formally identified.

It is not yet known how far she fell.
