The fundraising body supporting veteran Victorian Liberal MP Kevin Andrews received a $10,000 donation from the powerful NSW pokies lobby last year.

But the MP did not declare the donation to the Menzies 200 club at a candidate forum last week, despite being asked about it from the audience.

As previously reported, Mr Andrews' electorate fundraising body has received tens of thousands of dollars from ClubsNSW, despite his seat being in Melbourne's eastern suburbs.

The donations courted controversy because he was responsible for the Coalition's gambling policy in opposition before overseeing the repeal of poker machine reforms once Tony Abbott won office.

A new study from Monash University's Dr Charles Livingstone found that Menzies 200 received $10,000 last May when he was Minister for Defence.

At a candidate forum this week, Mr Andrews was asked directly how much he had received from ClubsNSW.

Mr Andrews said it was matter of public record that Menzies 200 had received $30,000 before the last election.

"I don't personally receive any money," Mr Andrews said last week.

Fairfax does not suggest anything improper from the donation.

The now Liberal backbencher has held Menzies since 1991 and holds a very strong 14.4 per cent buffer.

But the conservative MP is facing a high-profile challenge from serial candidate and poker machines and donation reform advocate Stephen Mayne.

Mr Mayne, who is a Melbourne City Councillor, is running on "true Liberal" pro-Turnbull campaign.

Mr Andrews' spokeswoman said he did not receive personal donations.

"Donations to the Liberal Party are a matter for the Liberal Party," she said.

The party said it did not comment on individual donations.

A spokeswoman for ClubsNSW said on occasions it made donations to interstate bodies on behalf of clubs nationally.

"These donations are made within the law and with full disclosure," she said.
