The detectives are asking the public to help find Dwayne Lindsey, 33, following the death of a six-month-old boy in Glenroy on Sunday.
Emergency services were called to an apartment block on Isla Avenue about 8.40am because of an unresponsive child.
The baby, reportedly called Chase, was taken to hospital with visible injuries to his body, where he later died.
An identified neighbour told Channel 7 they rang police after hearing a baby crying for several hours and then suddenly going quiet.
Meanwhile, a man who said he was the baby's stepfather, Chris Hamilton, told the news outlet that his step son had a playful personalty.
"I always played with his teddy bears and he would smile and laugh every time I used to come in the room."
He said the baby had no brain activity and was on life support before dying. His organs were donated.
A woman who said she was the child's aunty, Julie Barnes, said he was a beautiful baby.
"The day he was born, he just melted my heart straightaway. A beautiful little kid."
Mr Lindsey and the child's mother are believed to have moved into the unit in the days before the death.
Investigators say Mr Lindsey may be able to help with their enquiries and have urged him to hand himself in.
Detective Senior Sergeant Shane O'Connell said Mr Lindsey was known to police.
"He is known to police, but we have no information that would suggest he imposes a risk to any other member of the community," he said.
"We urge that he hand himself in to his nearest police station."
A man of the same age, Duane Lindsey, was jailed in 2014 after driving recklessly with his three-month-old baby on board.
A man lost his life in the incident, who was alleged to be chasing Mr Lindsey.
Police were not able to confirm whether it was the same man.
He is described as having an olive complexion, and dark hair with a medium build.
An image of Mr Lindsey has been released in the hope someone may recognise him or have information on his whereabouts.
