A 42-year-old man and his 43-year-old companion were rescued by Victoria Police and State Emergency Service volunteers after an hour in the lake.
The cause of the accident is unknown, but police Senior Constable Steve Gray said the water was choppy.
He said one man fell into the water and was unable to be dragged to shore by his companion.
The man was partially submerged for an hour while police attempted to locate the pair.
Sen Const Gray said the man was treated for hypothermia at the scene and was taken to Stawell Hospital.
“Both men were in lifejackets, and it could have been a lot worse if they weren’t,” he said.
SES regional duty officer Gavin Kelly said volunteers from Ararat and Stawell attended the scene with two rescue boats.
He warned residents to be aware when on any body of water.
“The weather can change at any time,” he said.
“Especially at this time of year be aware things change rapidly.
“Tell people how long you expect to be gone for, where you’re going and what you are doing.”
